— What is a sensitivity reader?
A sensitivity reader is someone (a writer, editor, or even a voracious reader) who reads a manuscript and checks it for any problems or inaccuracies with the representation of marginalized identities. Often they’re using their own lived experiences to help the author’s depiction of their identity. They’re not censors or the word police. They make suggestions to the author on how to improve these representations in their work, whether that’s by altering simple sentences or word choice, or tackling something bigger like a character arc or subplot. If you’re someone who’s writing outside their own identity, sensitivity readers can help you catch inaccuracies, unconscious bias, stereotypes, and more.
— What can you do for my manuscript?
I’ll do a full, in-depth reading of your work. If there are already areas you’re concerned about, feel free to point them out to me in advance, but know regardless that I’ll still read the full work. I’ll leave in-line comments where necessary, and I’ll provide a letter at the end with my full thoughts.
I’m qualified and comfortable doing a sensitivity read for the following identities and topics:

My sensitivity read is not an endorsement of the themes in your book. It’s not to be used as a defense or a shield against criticism of your work, and it’s also not a guarantee that your work is 100% free of any and all other biases. You may not use my sensitivity read as a justification for any sensitivity flaws another reader finds in your work in the future.
After your work has been published, I reserve the right to criticize it as a finished product.
You must ask permission before disclosing my identity as a sensitivity reader to anyone (i.e. in the acknowledgments).
Emailing me with a request isn’t an automatic acceptance for a sensitivity read. We’ll probably email/message back and forth for a bit before I decide if I’m a good fit for your project!
